Kienlen Constructors and Hillsdale Fabricators have teamed up to fabricate and erect the structural and miscellaneous steel for the new Iron Workers Local 396 Union Hall in St. Louis. Working as a subcontractor to The Lawrence Group, the Kienlen/Hillsdale team were able to meet the project’s demanding schedule to get steel onsite and erected by the first week of January, 2020.
Since the building would be the new home for the areas Iron Workers, the design incorporated a large amount of architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS). The main roof structure consists of 80′ long trusses, weighing nearly 10,000 pounds each. There are also four exposed tri-chord columns, which support two of the roof trusses, all of which are exposed to view from within the building.
Laydown space was limited onsite, so Kienlen and Hillsdale coordinated just-in-time deliveries of the trusses which were erected using Kienlen’s 110-ton rough terrain crane. Kienlen will be installing stairs, cable handrail and miscellaneous metals over the coming weeks as the building nears completion.
